Sakurajima with children: a half-day plan from ferry entrance to return

PON! For a first visit on foot, make Sakurajima Visitor Center your main destination. Check the return ferry while outbound, then follow the terminal, information desk, visitor center and return-terminal sequence.

Official information checked on 5 September 2026; no on-site inspection was made. Recheck ferry operation, fares, volcanic information and facility opening on the day.

Before crossing: check four things

PON!Check volcano notices, ferry operation, your return sailing and luggage before entering the boarding route.

  1. JMA listed Sakurajima at Volcanic Alert Level 3 on 5 September 2026. The level alone does not tell you whether the port or visitor center is open. Follow current exclusion zones, official warnings and local instructions.
  2. The official guide gives about 15 minutes for the crossing, sometimes about 20 minutes depending on sea conditions, plus 2–3 minutes to disembark. Service hours are 04:00–23:30; check the date-specific timetable.
  3. Save at least two return options from Sakurajima Port and work backwards from the time you must be back at the terminal.
  4. Both ports have lockers, but size and availability are limited. Ask your hotel about large luggage first.

Walking passenger: entrance, boarding and fare

PON!At Kagoshima Port, walking passengers board from the second floor. Regular-route fares are paid at Sakurajima Port.

Ordinary passenger fare: adult ¥250; child aged 1 through elementary school ¥130. One preschool child per accompanying adult may be free under the official condition. Two adults plus one elementary-school child cost ¥630 one way and ¥1,260 return.

  1. The official walk is 5 minutes from the Suizokukan-guchi tram stop or 1 minute from the Suizokukan-mae (Sakurajima Sanbashi) bus stop. Elevator users should check the route from the prefectural parking-side entrance.
  2. Follow passenger signs to the second-floor boarding gate and never enter the vehicle lane.
  3. Do not keep searching for a payment point at Kagoshima Port: pay the passenger fare at Sakurajima Port as directed.
  4. For the return, the passenger gate is on the third floor at Sakurajima Port. Although boarding closes 30 seconds before departure, families should aim to return 20–30 minutes early.

After arrival: one meaningful stop

PON!Ask at the information desk, then walk about 10 minutes or take the loop bus to Sakurajima Visitor Center.

  1. The tourist information desk is beside the pedestrian ticket gate. Ask for the day’s route and ash or transport advice.
  2. The visitor center is about a 10-minute walk from the port; the loop bus is approximately 6 minutes from Sakurajima Port to Visitor Center. Confirm the stop and operation locally.
  3. The official facility guide lists 09:00–17:00, free admission and year-round opening. Treat this as the main visit if children tire.
  4. The front entrance has a slope, and the facility lists a multipurpose toilet, nursing room and diaper-changing table. Confirm any assistance needs directly.
  5. Finish 20–30 minutes before your chosen ferry, then allow separate time for the walk or bus, toilets and fare.

When to cancel or simplify

  1. If warnings, ash, sea conditions or ferry information worry you, check official sources before leaving and do not cross when restrictions, cancellation or local instructions say not to.
  2. For motion sickness, illness or fatigue, remove extra stops and rest at the visitor center or terminal before returning.
  3. Yunohira Observatory is about 7 km from the visitor center and is not an add-on walk. Plan it only when a loop-bus return works.
  4. Drivers must use the vehicle route. Vehicle fare includes one driver; passengers are charged separately. Check vehicle length and the correct entrance.

Ask PON! with a return deadline

Example: “Two adults and one elementary-school child, no car, leaving Kagoshima-Chuo and returning from Sakurajima Port in the 15:00 hour. Give us the sequence centered on the visitor center.” AI does not guarantee same-day operation or safety.
