Fukuoka Airport to Hakata or Tenjin: from baggage claim to your return flight

PON! Choose arrival or departure, then domestic or international. The subway is on the domestic-terminal side. International passengers need an extra terminal transfer.

Domestic arrival → Hakata / Tenjin

PON!After collecting your luggage, find the South Elevator (南エレベーター) and go to B2F. First check whether you have exited the South or North arrival gate.

  1. If you checked luggage, find your flight on the baggage-claim display and collect your bags. Report missing or damaged luggage to your airline before leaving for the arrivals lobby.
  2. On 1F, walk ahead after exiting Arrivals / South (到着口／南). After Arrivals / North (到着口／北), turn right. Look for the South Elevator or the escalator directly to the Access Hall.
  3. With a stroller, wheelchair or large luggage, take the South Elevator to B2F. If stairs/escalators suit your needs, the direct escalator is another option. The B2F Access Hall connects to the subway ticket gates.
  4. Check your transport IC-card balance or buy a ticket to your destination. Pass through the gates and use an elevator or the appropriate route to the platform. For Hakata (博多) and Tenjin (天神), take the Airport Line toward Meinohama (姪浜方面).
  5. At Hakata or Tenjin, check your hotel address and the correct exit before leaving the ticket gates. Do not choose an exit from the station name alone; use the hotel steps below.

International arrival → Hakata / Tenjin

PON!The international terminal has no direct subway connection. Take the free domestic-terminal shuttle from bus stop 5 on 1F.

  1. Complete immigration, baggage collection and customs, then enter the 1F arrivals lobby. Resolve luggage problems with your airline before moving on.
  2. Follow signs for the shuttle to the Domestic Terminal / Subway (国内線・地下鉄). Go to stop 5 (5番乗り場) and confirm the bus is bound for the domestic terminal on its display or with staff.
  3. Take the free shuttle and get off at the next stop, the domestic passenger terminal shuttle stop. Allow for waiting, crowding and road delays, not just time on the bus.
  4. If you can use stairs/escalators, nearby subway entrances 1A and 1B lead underground. With a stroller or wheelchair, do not follow a staircase: ask shuttle-stop staff for the step-free route to the domestic terminal South Elevator, then descend to B2F. Do not guess a route through construction.
  5. Pass through the subway gates and take the Airport Line toward Meinohama. At Hakata or Tenjin, identify your hotel address, street exit and elevator route before the final walk.

Hakata / Tenjin → a domestic departure

PON!Take the Airport Line to Fukuoka Airport. Airline counters are on 1F; domestic security checkpoints are on 2F.

  1. Check the departure terminal and airline on your booking. Work backwards from your airline’s check-in, bag-drop, security and boarding deadlines. Add the hotel-to-station walk, train wait, terminal movement and congestion. Deadlines differ by airline.
  2. At Hakata or Tenjin, board the Airport Line toward Fukuoka Airport (福岡空港行き). Check the line name so you do not head for a different line, such as the Nanakuma Line.
  3. At Fukuoka Airport Station, use the Domestic Passenger Terminal Building ticket gate (国内線旅客ターミナルビル改札口). If you need check-in or bag drop, take the South Elevator or direct escalator to the airline counters on 1F.
  4. After airline procedures, follow your boarding instructions to security on 2F. For South Security (南検査場), take the South Elevator (南エレベーター) to 2F. For North Security (北検査場), take the Central Elevator (中央エレベーター) to 2F and turn right. Confirm the checkpoint for your flight with the airline or local signs.
  5. You still have a walk to the boarding gate after security. Recheck the gate and boarding deadline before stopping for shopping or food.

Hakata / Tenjin → an international departure

PON!The subway ends on the domestic side. Transfer to the free international-terminal shuttle at domestic-side stop 1.

  1. Check your airline’s international check-in, bag-drop and boarding deadlines. Include the train, shuttle wait and ride, terminal movement, security and departure immigration when working backwards.
  2. Take the Airport Line toward Fukuoka Airport to the final station. If using stairs/escalators, leave via the gate signed for the international shuttle and go up to 1F through entrance 1A or 2A, then walk to stop 1 (1番乗り場).
  3. With a stroller or wheelchair, use the Domestic Passenger Terminal Building ticket gate. Take the South Elevator to 1F, leave through entrance A (A出入口) and turn right for stop 1. This is not international-arrival stop 5.
  4. Confirm the bus is bound for the international terminal, then take the free shuttle. After getting off, follow Departures / Check-in signs to 3F and find your airline counter on the day’s display. Use the elevator with a stroller or wheelchair.
  5. After check-in and bag drop, continue through security, departure immigration and to your gate. If you may miss a deadline, contact the airline while travelling; do not assume that reaching the airport station means you can board.

The last part: station to hotel

Arriving at Hakata or Tenjin Station is not the end of the journey. Open your booking confirmation and check the exact hotel name, address and annex/building.

  1. Use your hotel’s official access page to identify its nearest station and exit. This article cannot give one exit number or walking time for every hotel.
  2. With a stroller, prioritise an elevator exit over the shortest exit. Check the station map or ask staff before leaving the ticket gates.
  3. At street level, find the hotel entrance on your map. If rain is heavy, children are tired or luggage is difficult, compare a taxi. Show the driver the hotel address.
  4. At the hotel, ask separately about luggage storage and room check-in. The time you can leave bags may differ from the time you can enter your room.

Time and cost: include more than the train

The airport’s guide gives approximately 5 minutes on the subway to Hakata and 10 minutes to Tenjin. These are train-ride estimates, not baggage-claim-to-hotel times. Add walking, ticket gates, waiting and the final hotel transfer. International arrivals also need the shuttle wait and ride.

The free terminal shuttle ride is approximately 10 minutes. Waiting, a full bus and road delays are extra. Leave a buffer on the return journey too.

Check the subway fare for your destination, age and payment method. Before boarding, ask staff how IC cards are used for each member of the family, how child fares work and what to do if the balance is insufficient. Contactless bank-card payment and buying a ticket by card are different systems. No single family fare is quoted here.

If the journey does not go to plan

  1. Toilet or feeding break: pause in the arrivals lobby and ask the information desk for the nearest toilet or nursing room. Divide responsibilities so luggage is not left unattended.
  2. Elevator unavailable or construction confusing: do not carry a loaded stroller up stairs. Ask staff on that floor for a step-free alternative. Current local instructions take priority over a saved diagram.
  3. Subway suspended or shuttle full: check service information and ask staff. Decide whether you have time to wait for the next bus; ask airport information about buses or taxis if needed. Roads may also be congested, so no arrival time is guaranteed.
  4. Late arrival or a long delay: check the last subway and last shuttle separately. If you cannot use them, ask about the taxi rank and tell your hotel you will be late. Do not assume you can stay in the terminal until morning.
  5. Flight deadline at risk: contact the airline with your flight details. Arrival at the airport station is not arrival at the boarding gate.
