Rainy Fukuoka with children: choose a place, get in and get home

Decide these things before leaving the hotel

Pack rainwear, a bag for wet items, a change of clothes and your booking screen. An indoor destination does not mean the walk from the station or car park is fully covered.

1. Ask whether your children want active play, toys or science. Check that the youngest can participate. With a large age gap, decide whether enough adults can accompany children in separate areas.
2. Check the official booking page for opening and availability before travelling. Do not assume you can arrive at a full venue and wait your way in.
3. Work backwards from the time you want to return. Allow for the journey home, food and admission procedures. On a flight day, set your sightseeing finish time first and ask the hotel about storing large bags.

1. NOBOLT: match the activities to height, weight and supervision

The Main / Student Discount (メイン／学割) plans require both height of at least 110 cm AND weight of at least 20 kg. Children aged 3 or older who do not meet both use the Kids plan; ages 0–2 have access only to limited areas. Elementary-school children and younger need a guardian. Individual activities have additional conditions: admission does not guarantee access to everything.

One adult with a 2-year-old and an 8-year-old: different activity areas may be involved. Ages 0–2 need constant accompaniment, so one adult may be unable to supervise both at once. Tell the venue your family make-up before booking and ask where you can stay together. If necessary, bring another adult or choose a shared activity. This is not a blanket ban on one-adult families. A child who is 110 cm tall but 19 kg does not meet the Main / Student weight requirement.

Before paying, read cancellation terms. The official FAQ says convenience-store payments cannot be cancelled. Credit-card bookings can be cancelled until 23:59 Japan Standard Time (JST) on the previous day, but not on the day. Part-cancellation of a group booking is not available; follow the booking provider’s procedure if numbers change.

1. Before booking: check each child’s height and weight and whether adults will play or only observe. Select the appropriate plans for everyone and save the booking QR code. Include dedicated socks for first-time players.
2. Getting there: the venue is NOBOLT in Odo (小戸), Nishi Ward, Fukuoka City. Use the official access videos for bus/walking directions from Meinohama Station (姪浜駅). It is not attached to the station. Compare a taxi in heavy rain. Drivers should check car park No. 4 across the road and take the parking ticket to reception.
3. At reception: show your QR code. Reception is available from 30 minutes before your session, so allow time especially when busy. Wear sports shoes and comfortable clothes, and put bags in the visitor lockers. Loan shoes are limited; do not rely on availability.
4. Before playing: confirm the child’s permitted areas with staff and agree where the family will meet. Adults on the observation plan cannot use the equipment. Follow staff instructions for rules and safety gear; this article is not an equipment-operation guide.
5. After playing: allow time for changing, toilets and collecting bags. A 120-minute plan does not mean the whole visit, including reception and getting ready to leave, takes only 120 minutes.

NOBOLT: a budget and timing example

Weekday 120-minute plan: one Main-plan adult plus one eligible Student-plan child, both first-time players: ¥3,000 + ¥2,000 + ¥400 × 2 = ¥5,800. Transport, meals and extra activities are excluded. Weekend rates, body size, age and whether the adult plays or observes change the total; this is not a universal family price.

Example sequence: reception 30 minutes before the booked slot → 120 minutes of play → get ready to leave → a meal or the hotel. Do not plan to eat brought-in food inside. The admission page and FAQ differ about drinks; check necessary drinks or infant food with the venue in advance.

2. Fukuoka Toy Museum: plan food and naps around entry

Fukuoka Toy Museum (福岡おもちゃ美術館) is at Oval Park, Mitsui Shopping Park LaLaport Fukuoka (ららぽーと福岡 オーバルパーク). Opening hours are 10:00–17:00. Elementary-school children and younger need a guardian. A regular ticket does not allow re-entry except for toilet use.

1. Before leaving: decide whether to finish before lunch or eat first. Book regular tickets online in advance; one-hour tickets are sold only at the counter. Do not plan a long visit just before a child’s nap.
2. Getting there: the official walking estimate from JR Takeshita Station (竹下駅) is 9 minutes. Add time with small children or in rain; this is not a claim of continuous shelter. Check the museum name and Oval Park location on your map. If walking does not suit you, check bus or car options in the official access information.
3. Before entry: use toilets and arrange feeding or food first. Follow venue signs to reception. Leave strollers in the designated space outside the museum and take valuables and essentials with you. Shoes are removed; adults generally need socks.
4. Inside and afterwards: follow your child’s interests and leave earlier if tired. After exiting, go for food or return to the hotel; do not expect to re-enter on a regular ticket.

Toy Museum: a budget and timing example

Regular online tickets: one adult ¥1,600 + one child aged 6 months through elementary-school age ¥1,200 = ¥2,800. Under 6 months is free. Transport and meals are extra. Regular counter tickets and one-hour tickets have different prices.

Example: breakfast and toilet → morning visit → leave for lunch → nap or hotel. For an afternoon visit, eat first and check that enough playtime remains before closing.

3. Fukuoka City Science Museum: exhibits and planetarium are separate choices

PON!Choose hands-on exhibits for children interested in science. Do not treat the entire museum as a seated rest space.

Fukuoka City Science Museum (福岡市科学館): entering the building is free, but the 5F Basic Exhibition Room (基本展示室) and 6F Dome Theater (ドームシアター) require separate tickets.

1. Before leaving: choose exhibits only or a planetarium show too. The usual closed day is Tuesday, with holiday and school-vacation exceptions. Check the show, start time, intended audience and seats; decide whether exhibits alone are enough if the show is full. Visitors who do not read Japanese should also check the programme language before paying.
2. By subway: from Hakata, take the Nanakuma Line (七隈線) to Ropponmatsu (六本松). From the Tenjin area, use Tenjin-minami Station (天神南駅) on the Nanakuma Line—not Tenjin Station on the Airport Line. Allow for the hotel-to-station walk and movement within the station.
3. At Ropponmatsu: the official guide says the museum is immediately outside Exit 3. With a stroller, check the station’s elevator route before leaving the gates instead of simply following the shortest exit. Your destination is the science museum in Ropponmatsu 421 (六本松421). There is a street-level section, so a fully dry route is not promised.
4. In the building: go to the general information and ticket counter on 3F. Confirm the exhibit/show and entry process before going to the 5F Basic Exhibition Room or 6F. Do not assume a show ticket also includes the exhibits.
5. On leaving: use the toilet, check your bags and return to Ropponmatsu Station. For Hakata, take the Nanakuma Line toward Hakata. Make food or the hotel your next step rather than adding too many stops.

Science Museum: a budget and timing example

5F Basic Exhibition Room: one adult ¥510 + one elementary/junior-high-school pupil ¥200 = ¥710. Preschool children enter free with a guardian. Shows, special exhibitions, travel and meals are separate. Whole-building opening hours are not necessarily each exhibition’s closing time.

Example: check opening and shows before leaving → morning exhibits → lunch → return. If adding a show, fix its start time first and fit the exhibits around it.

Tuesday exceptions: the museum says it opens daily during spring break, Golden Week, summer break and winter break, excluding the year-end/New Year closure. If a regular Tuesday is a public holiday, it opens and closes on the following weekday. Use the museum’s current calendar—not your own school’s holiday dates—to decide.

When the day needs to change

1. Full or closed: before travelling, check a different candidate’s opening and availability. If already there, rest indoors first. Odo, Ropponmatsu and LaLaport are separate areas; do not assume an easy hop between venues.
2. Tired children or different wishes: switch to a meal or the hotel, not “one more place”. With one adult, do not leave children in separate areas.
3. Heavy rain, thunder or suspended transport: an indoor destination does not make the journey safe. Stay somewhere safe, such as your hotel, check transport and local-authority information, and consider cancelling the outing. Refunds depend on the venue’s terms.
4. Cancellation: NOBOLT’s rules depend on payment method and do not allow same-day cancellation. The Toy Museum’s online tickets are described as cancellable until 09:00 Japan Standard Time (JST) on the visit day. Save the terms at purchase and make changes through the booking provider.
