Fukuoka Airport or Hakata to Dazaifu|A family guide with luggage and hotel stops
Should you go directly from the airport, or leave luggage at a Hakata hotel first? Choose the Tabito liner bus or Nishitetsu trains by arrival point, baggage, children and time of day.

First PON!|Choose by arrival point and luggage
Fukuoka Airport International
With light luggage, Tabito is the first option. It boards on the international-terminal side for Dazaifu. No reservation is required, but a full bus cannot take more passengers.
Fukuoka Airport Domestic
For Dazaifu direct, take the free terminal shuttle to the international side and check Tabito. With a Hakata hotel or large luggage, compare taking the subway to Hakata and leaving bags first.
Hakata Station or hotel
Leave luggage at the hotel, keep only essentials and go to bay 11 on the first floor of Hakata Bus Terminal. Save the Nishitetsu train route in case the bus is full.
Hakata Port International Terminal
Do not assume there is a direct Dazaifu bus. Take BRT or route 88 toward Hakata, leave luggage if applicable, then choose Tabito at Hakata Bus Terminal or the train via Tenjin.
Eight steps from baggage claim to Dazaifu
- 01Before leaving the restricted area, account for every traveller, checked bag and stroller. Report missing or damaged baggage to the airline.
- 02Open the hotel’s exact name, address and luggage-storage start time. Confirm whether bags can be held before check-in.
- 03Choose airport-direct or hotel-first. The return route does not have to match the outward route.
- 04For Tabito from International, confirm Dazaifu direction, the same-day departure, queue and payment method. Hakata–airport-only rides are not permitted on this service.
- 05From Hakata, use bay 11 on the first floor of Hakata Bus Terminal. Confirm the Dazaifu display and keep the Nishitetsu train via Tenjin as the traffic or capacity backup.
- 06On arrival at Dazaifu Station, check the return times first. Then confirm the approach, museum route and a stroller-friendly path from local signs.
- 07Kyushu National Museum states about a ten-minute walk from Nishitetsu Dazaifu Station. Leave time for children’s breaks instead of overfilling the visit.
- 08For the return, check the Tabito queue and traffic. If unsuitable, take Nishitetsu from Dazaifu to Futsukaichi and onward to Fukuoka (Tenjin), then confirm the final hotel transfer.
Bus or train|A practical comparison
Tabito fits when
You want fewer transfers, start at International or Hakata, can fold the stroller if required, and have margin for traffic.
Nishitetsu train fits when
You start around Tenjin, want a road-independent backup, or need more flexibility for the return. Change at Nishitetsu Futsukaichi for the Dazaifu Line.
Hotel-first fits when
You stay in Hakata or Tenjin, carry large cases, travel with small children or arrive in rain. Confirm luggage-storage hours and keep the claim ticket.
Short trips inside Dazaifu
For places beyond comfortable walking range such as Kamado Shrine, check the ¥100 Mahoroba community bus. Service was reduced in April 2026, so use the current timetable.
Fix a return option before sightseeing
On arrival, work back from your hotel, dinner, check-in or airport deadline and save one Tabito departure plus one Nishitetsu train option. In rain, heat or crowds, choose one major indoor stop or rest point rather than trying to cover everything.

Frequently asked questions
Can I reserve the Tabito bus?
The official page says no reservation is required. A full bus cannot take more passengers, so use the Nishitetsu train when the queue is long or timing is critical.
Does Tabito board at the Domestic Terminal?
Check the international-terminal boarding point. Add the free inter-terminal shuttle time from Domestic using the airport’s current instructions.
Should I sightsee with large suitcases?
When staying in Hakata or Tenjin, leaving bags at the hotel first is usually more practical. Confirm the hotel’s storage conditions.
Must I return by bus?
No. If the queue, traffic or timing is poor, return by Nishitetsu train via Futsukaichi and Tenjin, then complete the final transfer to your hotel.
